LESSONS OF JUDAISM

Stick With G-d

†† Back in the 1800's the Tates Watch Company of Massachusetts wanted to expand their business.Since they already made the cases for pocket watches, they decided to market compasses for the pioneers traveling west. It turned out that although their watches were of finest quality, their compasses, on the other hand, were so bad that people often ended up in Canada or Mexico rather than California. This, of course, is the origin of the expression, "He who has a Tates is lost!"

†† The source of a personís decision making determines the results. One source results in a life of regrets, another in satisfaction. The right source is like an anchor in a storm.

When feelings are calm and everything is in control it is easy to make good choices. But when there is hurt and fear, when there is a storm of emotions, an anchor is needed to minimize regretful decisions.

†† A good anchor is the simple phrase ďStick with G-d.ĒFollow His standards of conduct, His standards of right and wrong. When emotions are strong remember ďStick with G-d.Ē

†† It usually does not feel satisfying. It will feel very contrary to what the emotions want to do.However, the goal is not to satisfy the urge at that moment. The goal is to feel good about oneself because of wise choices made over the years. The bitterness of a poor decision is remembered long after the emotions that led to it are forgotten.

†† For example, you are having trouble with your spouse. You donít feel loved or appreciated.Your feeling is to get involved with another person who will appreciate you. However, G-dís standard is to avoid adultery and instead invest in the relationship.†† In one path you look back on your life with shame at having been an adulterer. In the other you have pride for doing the right thing in difficult circumstances and having grown as a result.

†† ďMany are the thoughts in the heart of man, but it is the counsel of the L-rd that enduresĒ1

†† Stick with G-d!
