LESSONS OF JUDAISM

Repair Your Part

A man once told his Rabbi that he was an atheist.  The Rabbi replied, “Your not an atheist, your ignorant.  You don’t know enough to not believe in G-d.”

The man saw problems in the world around him and concluded that there was no G-d.  However, the Rabbi understood that the real issue was not G-d nor the world but the man himself.  He was lacking in knowledge.  With the proper education and understanding he couldn’t help but believe in G-d.

Rabbi Menachem Schneerson said “If you see what needs to be repaired and how to repair it, then you have found a piece of the world that G-d has left for you to complete. But if you only see what is wrong and how ugly it is, then it is yourself that needs repair. 1

Each person is placed in this world to achieve certain goals.  Each soul has parts of the world that he is responsible for.  No person is responsible for the whole world or all the wrongs, just his part.

G-d gives each person whatever is needed to achieve the goal.  These tasks are the areas of growth that He has given him, they can not be avoided.  He will continue to bring them back, in one form or another until they are achieved.

This is linked to the unity of the Jewish people.  If one man blames another for something that is his own fault than that situation can not be repaired.  As long as blame is placed on someone or something that is not the cause than that problem cannot be fixed.  This is a source of disunity.

One who really cares is not placated by the fact that he has a good excuse. If the goal was not achieved, it was not achieved, regardless of the excuse.2
